Bing Makes Significant Gains in Search Market Share–But Google Still the Top Dog

Online competitive intelligence service Experian Hitwise released its US search market share results for the month of January 2010. Google continues to be the runaway leader in search market share with 71.49% of total US search volume share for the four weeks ending January 31, 2010. Yahoo!, Bing, and Ask.com received 14.57, 9.37, and 2.64, respectively.

Experian Hitwise goes on to report that the 65 other search engines in its Search Engine Analysis Tool accounted for 1.93 percent of U.S. searches.

And while both Google and Yahoo! were down a little over the previous year, Bing posted a gain of 5%, which is significant considering that US search volume approached 23 billion.

Nevertheless, Google maintains its stranglehold on its position at the top of the search engine heap – owning more of the US search market than Yahoo!, Bing, Ask.com, and the remaining 65 search engines that make up Hitwise’s analysis combined.

  1. The last time I checked on Google’s share in the search industry is still around 65%. Although bing has joined in the market to play, Google is still the best and fastest. Not to mentioned Google have added many services such as analytics, checkout, map, email, groups and others to make their users more familiar and loyal to Google. Hope Bing will improve so that Google doesn’t monopolize the market :)

I always find it interesting how different web analytics firms report significantly different numbers when it comes to search market share. comScore January 2010 findings report that Google has, as you say, 65% of the core search market share for the US.

I came across another report this morning that claimed Google’s share of the US search market was around 85%. It just goes to show you have different data collection methodologies can result in big differences.

In any case, there’s no doubt about the fact that Google is the 800 pound gorilla when it comes to the search engines.

And you’re right that a more competitive marketplace is better for the end users, so let’s hope Bing keeps pushing forward so that Google continues to innovate and push forward.

      Cheers,
