After much speculation and anticipation, Apple’s CEO, Steve Jobs, unveiled the Apple iPad today and it looks like the rumours about it being an “iPhone on steroids” are true. It also looks like it will transform the way we experience the mobile web and may end up being a category killer for both smartphones and laptop computers.
Key capabilities include:
- Web browsing – the iPad’s Safari browser is just as capable as it is on the iPhone and will eliminate the need for zooming in and out
- Email – iPad offers a great layout and an on-board QWERTY keyboard (with the option of a full-size traditional keyboard thanks to the iPad Keyboard Dock)
- Photos – combining “flick scrolling” with a larger screen will take the photo viewing/sharing experience to a whole new level
- Music and Video – if you can overlook challenges in terms of power, the built-in access to the iTunes store as well as the availability of YouTube and YouTube HD streaming, the iPad is a clear winner
- Games – the larger screen is only going to enhance the experience for gamers as optimized iPad apps will be hitting the market pretty quickly
- Newspapers and eBooks – iPad may breathe fresh life into the moribund newspaper business as users will be able to load up a copy of the New York Times and enjoy a full multi-media experience such as in-line video experience. Apple’s new iBook store promises to mount a serious challenge to other eBook stores in the market
As for price and availability worldwide shipping for Apple iPad Wi-Fi models will start in late March 2010 ($500 for 16GB version, $600 for 32GB, and $700 for 64GB).
Expect to see the Apple iPad 3G models to start shipping in the U.S. and selected countries in April 2010 ($630 for 16GB version, $730 for 32GB, and $830 for 64GB).
Worldwide availability and international pricing will be announced at a later date. International carrier deals are expected to be ready by June 2010.

I’ve just watched the Apple presentation and I’m not entirely convinced that this will be a massive hit. I think it’s a device that not many of us really
need and that’s one of the reasons that such devices have never really taken off in the past. Despite this, I’m sure that if anyone can turn it into a
success then Apple can. The price didn’t seen too bad though, but I think this is probably down to the lack of a proper MacBook type OS on the machine rather than what appears to be a cut down version.
I think that they are really going to capitalize on the explosion of the mobile web. Although smartphones will still have the iPad beat in terms of battery power – for now – I think the functionality makes it a game changer.
Thanks for contributing!
Cheers,
Dawson
I love it! I was refreshing the keynote on my iphone from the cinema, I need one of these in the car! – wouldnt it be wonderful if they came out with a waterproof housing, bath-mac
Personally I think this si the beggining of a step change in how we use the web. The ipad has lots of faults but so did the iphone and look how that has moved us on.
Many people think it offers nothing new. But we said that with the iphone (remember the faithful Blackberry).
I think it will eventually change how we consume books and print media in general.
I’ll be getting one anyway!
As always there has been a very mixed reaction to the new launch. Some reviewers are saying we are seeing nothing new and it is a product that has been designed to solve a problem we do not have.
Others are saying it is the best new toy on the market. I believe it will sell very well and will revolutionise the way we educate ourselves going forward. For me it is a buy.

Don’t underestimate the Apple iPad. Apple has a track record of being reliable and building a cult of personality around their products. I wouldn’t be too surprised if it is its own killer app!
